As organizations adopt various scaled agile frameworks, many project managers struggle to find their place in this new landscape. The traditional roles of task management and command-and-control must evolve into enabling teams and fostering collaboration.

In scaled agile environments, project managers become servant leaders, focusing on removing impediments and supporting decentralized decision-making. This requires a significant mindset shift—from managing timelines to delivering incremental value and embracing change based on customer feedback.

While these frameworks promote team autonomy, project managers still play a crucial role in ensuring alignment across teams and with broader organizational goals. Striking this balance is key to successful large-scale agile implementations.

Importantly, adopting a scaled agile framework is more than just a process change; it’s a cultural transformation. Project managers must lead by example, embodying agile principles and fostering an environment of continuous improvement.

The debate continues on whether traditional project management roles will diminish in mature agile environments. However, strategic alignment and risk management at the portfolio level remain areas where experienced project managers can still add significant value.

Understanding and adapting to these shifts are essential for project managers to thrive in an agile world.
